I don't get much of a break this year so I'm trying to jam it as full of friends and family as I possibly can. So far, I've been busy getting fat, fat, fat. Two HUGE meals the last 2 nights and another 2 coming up! That's ok though. I came home and realized (to my unparalleled delight) that I had lost 5 pounds just by being on the wards! Much love and luck in the New Year!

I say why me?
Why me?
Why me?
Why is it me?
Five for Fighting - Love Song
I spent 2 hours with the same family this afternoon. 3 children with 3 different fathers. 2 are wards of the province. They separated. She got full custody of the remaining child. He got guardianship, every second weekend and alternate holidays. He's never paid his child support so she doesn't let him see his child. He smoked around the child. She got a court order so he'd stop. Granddad got angry. She got a court order so he'd leave her alone. She got married, stepdad wants guardianship. Paternal grandparents now want guardianship too. She says the child refuses to get out of the car when it's time to visit. That the child returns from visits crying, irritable and won't let anyone near his bottom end, not even to change his diaper. That he hits, kicks, bites, strangles the cat and he sure didn't learn it from her. The court date's set for January.
Who to believe? What's truth? What's the difference between the truth and the truth as she sees it, as he sees it? How did I get in the middle of this? How do I get out?
I'm on ambulatory clinics, I have all the free time in the world. I could study in preparation for wards, I could get my Christmas shopping done, I could clean up the apartment and cook for my sister, I could catch up with all the people who've fallen along the wayside, but I don't. Being bored is the worst.
Random notes:
1) Saw my first cardiac arrest today. I happened to be in the room next door assessing another patient when the nurses realized something was wrong. They came next door and grabbed me. I would like to say that I kept my head and did everything I'd been taught to do in CPR. But instead I panicked, ran and grabbed my resident on the next ward and let the code team run the show. Next time will be better...
2) Gave myself a needlestick injury on my last day of surgery. Beyond stupid.
3) Great Thai food on Friday night following the exam. Have missed good food, good sleep and social interaction these last 6 weeks. Looking forward to removing head from proverbial sand.
4) Have not bought a single Christmas present. Crap.
5) Lady at deli counter in T&T now recognizes me. Maybe I should cook more.
6) Worse under-eye circles ever.
7) Surgery is immensely gratifying and lotsa fun. Hmmm... Nah...couldn't handle the lifestyle.
8) I feel like I should write a total of 10 things just because it's been a while since I've posted and 10 is a good number.
9) When tying knots, I've realized I like odd numbers. Particularly 7. There's a little OCD in all of us.
10) My squishy bought me Ben & Jerry's to celebrate the end of surgery and my return to the world in general. I bought her sushi and takeout. Tonight is a fat night.
11) Oh, we're at number 11. Hm...I guess it's an odd number so it's ok. 4 more days till Troidy Ko comes!!! The end.
